I’m looking to see if you can help me find cyclists who would be interested in riding from Lawrence to Johnson County with ‘Team Will’ next Saturday, beginning around Noon. Team Will ( http://www.team-will.org/) is a community of cyclists of all skill levels and ages committed to raising public awareness and funds for childhood cancer research through a mixture of cycling activities and events. The most astounding thing that Team Will does is a coast-to-coast bicycle ride across America. They did this in 2006, 2008 and are about to embark on their 2010 journey in just a few days!

Team Will’s plight caught the eye of a filmmaker a couple of years ago. He was SO touched by what this amazing group of guys is doing for children with cancer – the documentary “Go The Distance” was born! (http://www.gothedistancemovie.com/index.html) This touching movie chronicles the journey of Team Will’s 16 cyclists ride across America in 2008. (Read the director’s statement here and why he decided to do this movie:http://www.gothedistancemovie.com/dirstatement.html)

Team Will is coming through KC on June 19th & we thought it would be very inspiring to have local cyclists ride alongside with them to show them how much the people of KC respect and support what they are doing for these kids! Channel 5 and Fox 4 have already told us they’re covering the story. In addition, we’re hoping that ALL local media will be touched here in KC and be moved to cover this story – and our BIG GOAL is to get the national media to cover it too! Team Will is also coming to Overland Park that night for a childhood cancer rally we’re having where we’re having a showing of their movie along with some inspiring words from Team Will, themselves, Congressman Jerry Moran and several kids and their families here in KC battling childhood cancer.

I connected with a local woman that is personal friends with Braden Hofen and her mom. Their story was featured a few months ago. Braden is a 5-year old son who is battling stage 4 neuroblastoma (a VERY rare childhood cancer) and who also found out 3 months ago that SHE is battling breast cancer too. Suffice it to say – kids cancer is NOT getting the awareness it deserves – it needs the funding, research and awareness that adult cancers receive.

This is very last minute – but I’m really hoping we can make it happen!

    Thanks for your help!

  2. iGran Fondo- Biking Challenge

    Greetings from Sioux City, IA!
Iowa has never had a Gran Fondo, but all that will change on July 21, 2012 when hundreds of riders will leave Sioux City in a race for the Yellow Jersey. That’s right, there IS a yellow jersey. So what’s a Gran Fondo, you ask? Basically, it’s a timed race with challenges throughout the course. Popular in Europe and across the United States, the ride is a personal battle against the distance and, in turn, the clock. Rides typically are about 100 miles, but feature shorter courses for riders seeking less of a challenge. The 2012 inaugural ride will feature three options, all of them in the beautiful Loess Hills of western Iowa.
Fondo – 30 Miles, out-and-back route that starts and ends in Sioux City Medio Fondo – 60 Miles, casual, quick ride with more stops to the start city (Sioux Center)
iGran Fondo – 100-miles ride, chip-timed, on a specific course, that’s a cross between a race and a ride. VISIT OUR WEBSITE TO SIGN UP!! http://igranfondo.com/
